Hamster Ball follies, Best Buy, Napster, Target Field, Zeus

You may now watch your host’s twin brother falling out of a giant plastic hamster ball, here.

Best Buy buys Napster? Napster? For $126.8 billion? Sorry, million - $126 billion was the 1999 price. It may seem a strange piece of news to some, like Target announcing it will buy pets.com for eleventy million, but Napster has a subscriber base of 700,000 people who don’t use torrents who like to get their music legitimately. But maybe Best Buy plans something else; maybe they just bought a brand to make it easier to introduce in-store downloads. Don’t know. But I was in a Best Buy store this weekend, and noted as usual the extraordinary amount of room devoted to Cds. It seems a waste. It’s like going to the grocery store for milk and seeing cows and pails.

The Twins stadium will be called Target Field. Experts say this will help raise brand awareness for the small, beleaguered retailer, which has struggled in past years to make people aware they exist. The idea, as I understand it, is that people will see the logo and wonder if this company has any local outlets, and whether they sell toilet paper and shirts.

There's no news about Zeus, but we'll keep an eye on the situation.

Impervious and Untouchable

Fabulous piece of filmmaking, thanks for sharing it with us. Your family must be so proud of how your work enhances our daily experience. :)

Seriously. Loved it.

Speaking of Target

and the Bleat, I also went there this weekend. I needed some lamp oil. Alas they were out, apparently lamp oil is a seasonal product, though I only have a small indoor oil lamp. The clerk said if there were any it would be in the clearance area, which was by the seasonal stuff. And while the seasonal area is full on-bore Halloween, tucked into a small corner (for the moment) there's the beginnings of trappings for That Holiday. And it still is officially summer.

re:lamp oil

Odd, around these parts of California, Monterey Bay and SF bay, lamp oil is always available at K-mart, Target and the hardware stores.

Of course around here a light sprinkle can trigger a blackout. So many power lines near ready to fall over trees I think. Our Oily American Earl lamps get quite a work out every winter.

No Ball For Me... :(

<pointless-comment type="Selfish whining" reason="Very bored at work, not enough to do apparently">
Curse the workplace network nannies... I'm not able to get to the video, it is blocked from here. I wanna see the hamster ball! [grumble]

How could those jerks upstairs justify forcing us to not use the company network bandwidth to watch amusing videos? Don't they realize that we want to avoid doing work by surfing the internet? I mean, come on, do they actually expect us to do work on a Monday? When there are plenty of entertaining videos to watch on the internet? What the heck are they thinking...

And unfortunately, I already used up my lunchbreak to take a nap, and I'm going to be busy all evening, so the earliest possible time for me to watch the video is tomorrow. I'll probably forget about it by then. So I'll never get to find out what it looks like when a columnist/blogger falls out of a giant hamster ball.

M'oh...

bandwidth nannies must be spanked.

bad, bad bandwidth nannies, monitoring for folks who use a video stream socket with the other screen scrolling down the payroll lists. you are wrecking the economy of the future. go work at Lehman Brothers, they need people to tag furniture for the repo trucks.

is this Target Field... is this any way related to Target Stadium, over on the other side of the garbage burner downtown? what a cute logo. is there some store that sells shirts and shorts with that logo on them someplace? if not, maybe we can use it for many other purposes on the web, on street corners, and elsewhere. it could be the new smiley face!

if this is a new economy, how come everybody wants my old-fashioned money?

CDs

I like CDs. With downloads it's like you don't actually own anything. I just can't get used to carrying around all my music on a hard drive. I own way too many CDs for that. And mp3 players are for people who are able to listen to the same songs a million times over. Not for me.

benjammin, I'm in the same boat as you. I'm way behind on the videos and I never see twitter because of my company's net nanny. At least there's a new page at the strib that has all of the Lileks videos in one place for you to look at after work (if you can remember to).

Garrison Keilor in a Hamster Ball

I don't suppose there a chance that the genial, kind and down-to-earth Mr. Keillor would shill for Disney and give the hamster ball a spin? I'd make a donation to MPR if he would.

bandwidth nannies in a hamster ball!

THAT's what we need to see.

if this is a new economy, how come everybody wants my old-fashioned money?
