Vidcast: Looking for Giant Bags of Rice

Here’s a little video investigation of the Rice Crisis in the Metro. Is famine upon us? Short answer, no. Long answer: you’ll have to watch the vid.

The picture quality is a bit grainy, because I had to use the special undercover camera. Three minutes. Back around 10:59; until then, feel free to play it over and over again, and inflate our hit counts.

Grainy video

Well of course the video is grainy. It is about rice after all.

About the only shortage I see around me is the greenback shortage in my wallet.

Crices

If you're looking for large bags of rice you could always order it online.

Ah, I see why you can't find rice. It is a major crices.

Self fulfilling prophesy.

Of course, since it was announced in the news that there is a shortage, people who have never bought 20 pound bags of rice before in their lives just have to run out and buy as much as they can.

and as usual, the REAL story is being ignored

which is, just exactly how big ARE those portions if you cook up a 100-pound bag of rice for supper?

that's what is wrong with (burp) America. hey, pass that pot of pork chops again.

re: Self fulfilling prophesy

As long as they don't announce a potential chocolate shortage, I'll be ok...

What, there's a chocolate shortage?! I better run right out and stock up. Panic! Call the media and ask them about the chocolate shortage.

As Werner Erhard might say,

If we commit to build a context of authentic, transformative empowerment, we will create the possibility of an environment where a shortage of chocolate cannot exist.

I'm still puzzling over 'tilapia loins.'

rice

Hey I know you all think the worldwide food crisis is funny because (hopefully) you'll never have to worry about it, but believe me it is a real concern for many. We've lived in Malaysia for 8 yrs. now....there are people even here in Kuala Lumpur who are struggling...some of you ought to get your head out and realize what's going on in other places. the world doesn't begin and end at WalMart or Costco...No Mr. Lileks you don't have to worry about a 'famine", but I really don't think it's anything to make light of..being a smart*** and ignorant is a dangerous combination.

History always repeats itself

This reminds me of the paper shortage in the early 70's. People were buying TP rolls by the 100s. Of course, there wasn't really a shortage until the rumor got started, the media picked up on it, and everyone panicked.

j_peters, you need to lighten up

You need to get laid or something while eating a big bowl of rice.

famine

I don't believe Mr Lileks was making fun of hunger in Malaysia or anywhere else - he seemed to me to be mocking the faddish panic bulk buying of rice in the US - an activity that is completely media-driven and utterly pointless.
