Immigrant rights vigil scheduled for tonight

Immigrant rights supporters have scheduled a candlelight vigil for tonight in the wake of a recent government crackdown in Willmar.

When: 7:30 p.m. Wednesday

Where: Government Plaza, Hennepin County Government Center, 300 6th St., Minneapolis.

Who: Community leaders, immigrant rights supports.

Why: To urge support for a temporary restraining order that Centro Legal has asked for against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office of the Department of Homeland Security. A ruling is expected Thursday.

At issue: Since April 10, the legal advocacy group Centro Legal says immigration agents have conducted a series of "warrantless and nonconsensual raids" of Latino homes and acted in discriminatory fashion against Latinos in public places.

Shouldn't this read Illegal Immigrant rights vigil?
I don't know anyone who has a problem with people coming here LEGALLY.
This really makes me mad! I am trying to get my fiancee here legally and her visa was denied. The consulate said I am trying to evade immigration laws and my engagement is a sham. I gave them all the proof that is was a real relationship but they still sent it back to USCIS. It has been a year and I expect this process to take another 2 years at least.
So why don't we call this what it really is. A vigil for Illegals!!! Who are they trying to kid?

Personally, I'd like to urge the US Immigration office to continue to enforce the US immigration laws, including deporting of illegal aliens and sanctions for the companies that hire them, as the majority of the US public desires.

Illegal Immigrants

You are right of course, this should be an illegal immigrant rights vigil, with illegal immigrant advocates wanting a restraining order against law enforcement to stop enforcement of the law. Really boggles the mind if you try to wrap your mind around it.

I have written several letter to the Star Tribune and AP about there use of the very misleading "immigrant rights" slogan, but they have an agenda they are pushing.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS RIGHTS? A thief has rights, and a thief may also feel that they're doing it to improve their situation in life. But the fact is, they are still a thief and they are breaking the law. Every time an ILLEGAL receives medical treatment, picks up a welfare check, food stamps, or accepts subsidized housing they are stealing from the taxpayers of this country. The only "rights" they have are to be arrested, and have their butts kicked back across whatever border they crossed to come here ILLEGALLY to begin with!

We pay a high price for illegal immigration

Public health issue: Being illegal they have never been tested for TB, polio, parasitic infections, etc.

Having low wages: We foot the bill for emergency rooms, doctor visits, perscription drugs.

Liability: Driving with no license, no insurance.

Public services: We educate their children (in MN $10,000 yr/pupil), they may also receive welfare.

And what happens when a 'hard workin illegal' burns out/is injured? They aren't educated, what will they do? Go on welfare, SS disability?

This doesn't seem like a deal for us citizens. ICE should step up it's enforcement and ship every one the illegals back!

Let me get this straight - a protest needs to be staged for ILLEGAL Immigrants? Umm, hello - what does the first word mean? Secondly, we want to protest enforcement of the law? Third, last time I checked they netted "ILLEGAL" immigrants on these raids which makes it successful. So this is no different than a dragnet that captures criminals since that is what they are since they are here ILLEGALLY. Next, they don't pay taxes, steal jobs and burden law enforcement resources. Sorry, but there are proper channels to go through. Here is a news flash - every country has immigration laws. Hello, is this thing on? However if you truly believe they are being treated unfairly then how about becoming an ILLEGAL immigrant yourself in Iraq. Their immigration policy is more lax these days. If you are lucky you might not get caught only get blown up in a market the next day.

Maybe all the local ICE

Maybe all the local ICE agents could walk around this fine vigil and pick up a few illegals that could be hanging around. Wait a minute they could round up every person that shows up, because only illegals would habe any interest in supporting this bogus vigil. Come here legally and stay out of my pocket, and everyone elses.

Minn. lawmaker arrested on DWI charge

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The president of the state Senate was arrested on drunken-driving charges hours after gaveling the 2007 session to a close and then apparently celebrating at an inn favored by government workers.
James Metzen was stopped in his sport utility vehicle early Tuesday after an officer observed him weaving in his lane, South St. Paul Police Chief Michael Messerich said. The stop occurred less than a mile from his house.
Metzen was given a field sobriety test and was arrested. His blood-alcohol level was 0.15 percent, almost twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent. He faces two misdemeanor charges, including fourth-degree driving while impaired.
"Senator Metzen was given no special treatment, nor did he request any special treatment," Messerich said. "He was treated like anyone else."
Metzen, 61, a seven-term Democratic senator from South St. Paul, told officers he had three or four drinks, Messerich said.
Metzen's attorney, Paul Rogosheske, told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis the senator had been at Kelly Inn, a favorite haunt of the Capitol crowd, before heading home.
In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Larry Pogemiller, Metzen apologized "for my lapse in judgment." He said he had attended a celebratory gathering with his peers after leaving the Capitol and used bad judgment.
Metzen has drawn attention for alcohol-related issues before.
